Here’s my personal story of life-changing events, that elevated reflexology from an interest to a passion, and then to a lifelong career.
The first time I ever became aware of reflexology, I was in middle school and my grandmother sent me a card in the mail with a reflexology chart and instructions for pushing ‘buttons’ on the feet. Many years later….here’s how it became an integrated part of my every day life, my passion, and my career.
In my early twenties, with an infant to care for, our tiny family of three sailed from western Canada to Hawaii…so I guess you could say it all started with a 38 foot sailboat, that would be floating far away from doctor-care if health problems arose during our several months at sea.
Enter several books on reflexology, which I remembered from those earlier years.
As we sailed, I studied and practiced, using books and my family’s feet, and every time a health issue came up, I decided to give reflexology a try first. Man! It worked! Through sprains, teething, sea sickness, and even an infection from a wound, reflexology pressure points were relieving pain and inflammation, and calming my little baby. I was hooked!
So when we arrived at our first port, you can imagine my shock to see a three-week reflexology course about to start at the Hilo School of Massage Therapy. What a sign from the universe: we were planning on staying in Hilo for exactly 3 weeks before moving on. I jumped in with both feet!
Once we returned to Canada, I knew I wanted to do reflexology for real, as a profession, and I became certified shortly after. This was 1995, and I’ve never turned back.
Why would I? I found something that allowed me to:
Choose my own hours, which was great with a young family
Work with people and see real improvements happening with their health
Feel appreciated and know I was doing work that had value and meaning
Earn my own living on my terms, without compromising my time or values
But I thought: why is reflexology so hard to come by? Shouldn’t something that works this well be available to so many more people? (It was the early nineties, and the internet was just a baby.)
So not long after I started my private practice, I began teaching workshops, workshops became certification courses, and finally, the Atlantic School of Reflexology became a federally recognized career college in Canada, with courses across the spectrum of holistic bodywork. (Hooray!)
